Reaching Las Tablas is relatively straightforward.

Most travelers arrive via Panama City, which serves as the primary gateway. From the capital, Las Tablas is approximately a 4-hour drive along the Inter-American Highway. The scenic journey showcases the rolling hills and farmland of the Azuero Peninsula.

If you don’t have a car, public transportation options are readily available. Comfortable buses leave regularly from Panama City’s Albrook Terminal. Tickets cost about $10 to $15 per person (if you’re retired, make sure to ask for a descuento de jubilado, retiree’s discount).

Once in Las Tablas, local taxis and buses make getting around town and visiting nearby attractions convenient and affordable.

For added convenience, regional flights to the nearby city of Chitré are available, reducing travel time and providing an alternative for those who prefer not to drive long distances.

Groceries and dining out are equally budget-friendly. Fresh produce, seafood, and meats can be purchased at local markets for a fraction of what you’d pay in North America. Dining at a local fonda (a small restaurant) can cost as little as $5 for a full meal, while more upscale dining options are still reasonably priced.

Utilities, including water and electricity, are affordable, though air conditioning during the hotter months can increase energy costs.

Las Tablas is a treasure trove of activities and experiences, offering something for everyone…

          Carnival

Undoubtedly the town’s most famous event, Carnival in Las Tablas is a must-see spectacle. Held in the days leading up to Lent, the celebrations feature elaborate floats, traditional dances, and lively music.

Even if you’re not a dancer, you’ll find it impossible to resist joining the festivities.

Pro tip: Arrive early to secure a spot near the main plaza and stay hydrated during this high-energy event. Always keep your belonging close to you and do not carry any valuables.

          Beaches

Playa Uverito, just 15 minutes from town, is a popular spot for expats and locals alike. You can enjoy a quiet stroll along the shore, dip into the warm Pacific waters, or indulge in fresh seafood at beachfront restaurants.

Looking for a more secluded vibe? Check out Playa El Rompío, known for its soft sands and peaceful atmosphere. It’s perfect for a picnic, reading a book under a palm tree, or soaking up the sunset views.

Bonus: If you’re into fishing, these beaches are excellent starting points for a day of deep-sea adventures.

          Nature And Outdoor Activities

While Las Tablas is known for its cultural allure, the surrounding Azuero Peninsula is a playground for nature lovers.

Don’t miss out on heading over to the Isla Iguana Wildlife Refuge, a pristine island paradise with crystal clear waters, white-sand beaches, and vibrant coral reefs. Whether you’re snorkeling with tropical fish, hiking the trails, or birdwatching, this island offers an unforgettable escape into nature.

For something closer to town, explore the rolling hills and countryside on foot, by bike, or even on horseback. The area is dotted with small farms, offering scenic backdrops and a chance to experience rural Panamanian life up close.

          Culinary Delights

Foodies will fall in love with the flavors of Las Tablas

Start your day with a steaming cup of Panamanian coffee and fresh empanadas from a local café. For lunch, try the town’s famous sancocho, a hearty chicken soup seasoned with culantro, served with rice, fresh bread, or patacones (fried green plantains).

Seafood lovers will be in paradise here, as the proximity to the Pacific Ocean means you’ll always find fresh fish, shrimp, and other delights. Head to a fonda (a small, family-run restaurant) for authentic Panamanian dishes or indulge in a beachfront feast of grilled fish and patacones (fried green plantains).

Pro tip: Don’t leave without sampling local desserts like suspiros (meringue cookies) or cocadas (coconut sweets).

            Retire In Las Tablas

            Climate In Las Tablas
            Climate In Las Tablas

For expats, Las Tablas presents an affordable and immersive experience in Panamanian culture. Unlike more tourist-heavy destinations, it retains an authentic charm where newcomers can feel at home while embracing the local way of life.

With its rich cultural traditions, sunny weather, and welcoming community, Las Tablas is a hidden gem that offers something for everyone, from retirees seeking tranquility to adventurers eager to explore its natural wonders.

The expat community in Las Tablas is relatively small but growing. Many retirees from North America and Europe are drawn to the town for its affordability, safety, and cultural authenticity. Despite the smaller community, there’s no shortage of social connections, with regular meet-ups, community events, and language exchange opportunities.

Las Tablas also appeals to digital nomads and remote workers seeking an affordable base. With improving infrastructure and reliable internet options, it’s becoming easier to maintain a work-life balance in this serene setting.

Las Tablas is a quintessential Panamanian town, and Spanish is the primary language spoken here. While you’ll find that many Panamanians are patient and willing to help bridge language gaps, the number of fluent English speakers is relatively small compared to larger cities or expat-heavy hubs like Boquete.

In everyday interactions—whether at the market, a local restaurant, or while chatting with neighbors—basic Spanish skills will go a long way.

            Health Care In Las Tablas

Las Tablas has both public and private health care facilities. The Hospital Joaquín Pablo Franco Sayas is the main public hospital, serving the town and surrounding areas. As with most public hospitals in Panama, the cost of care is very low, but wait times can be long, and English-speaking staff may be limited. However, the hospital is well-equipped for general medical needs.

For faster service and a more personalized experience, many expats choose private clinics. These clinics offer quicker appointments, shorter wait times, and often have English-speaking doctors. Prices for consultations and procedures are still significantly lower than in North America, making private health care an affordable option for many expats.

Las Tablas has a good selection of general practitioners, dentists, and specialists. Routine doctor’s visits are inexpensive, typically costing between $15 and $40. Many doctors trained in Panama City or abroad, and while most consultations are in Spanish, some doctors speak English, especially those who regularly treat expats.

Las Tablas is a safe town. Low level theft is likely the only safety concern here and providing you take reasonable precautions and don’t flaunt expensive items you should be just fine.

Las Tablas enjoys a tropical climate with two distinct seasons: the dry season (December to April) and the rainy season (May to November). During the dry season, sunny days and blue skies dominate, making it ideal for exploring beaches and outdoor activities.

Temperatures range from 75 F to 90 F (23 C to 32 C), with refreshing coastal breezes helping to offset the heat.

The rainy season brings lush greenery to the landscape, with intermittent heavy downpours and cooler temperatures. While the rains can limit some outdoor activities, they also enhance the region’s natural beauty and provide a welcome break from the heat.
