Is Portugal in Europe or Africa? Portugal is located in the western portion of Europe. When looking at a map, you will see that Portugal shares its northern and eastern borders with Spain, its only bordering country, and is surrounded by the Atlantic Ocean to the west and the south.

Portugal is geographically positioned in the Northern and Western hemispheres of the Earth. Looking at a map of Portugal, you’ll see that it’s situated in the westernmost part of Europe, and is bordered by Spain in the north and east; and by Atlantic Ocean in the south and west.

In 1415, under the lead of Prince Henry, the Portuguese set sail on voyages that would make them the first to discover ocean routes toIndia,Brazil,China, and Japan, and finding settlements on African coasts.

Even though its not the biggest country, it does offer a vast diversity of physical geography, from low-lying coasts and plains to mountains such as the Estrela Mountains, rising nearly 6,500 feet.

Portugal’s Algarve region has a mild, almost Mediterranean climate, with over 300 days of sunshine a year, a beautiful coastline with 150 great sandy beaches, and it’s in one of the safest countries in the world, with friendly locals, great cuisine, fine local wines, and a low cost of living with easy residency options.

Above all, the country’s Golden Visa and other schemes such asurban renewal projectshave helped establish Portugal as an attractive destination for foreign research and development companies, entrepreneurs, and investors.

When planning to visit Portugal, you’ll find regular direct flights to Lisbon, Faro, and Portofrom most everywhere in Europe, Canada, and some U.S. cities. In addition to that, some airlines offering these flights are American Airlines/British Airways, Delta/Air France/KLM, and Air Canada, among others.

Flight time from the West Coast of the United States can take about 13 to 15 hours if you have a connecting flight. Also, flying from the East Coast can take about five hours.
