How do I downsize and declutter my home to prepare for a move overseas?
This is one of the main worries of people who decide to start a new life abroad.
If you know where you want to go, here are Kathleen’s and Lief’s tips for downsizing and moving abroad:
Have A Yard Sale
This is common in the U.S but it may not be in other places such as Ireland or France. If you want to sell furniture or big items, take pictures and make a binder. This way you’ll avoid people entering your home.
Donate
This is a very easy option. There are many places where you could donate your things. You may need to take your donations yourselves, however, a pick-up service might be available in your area.
Sell Your Things Online
Furniture or other big items are not easily sold on yard sales. However, this is not an excuse to keep them. Nowadays there are many apps you can use to sell anything you might have.
Outsource To Estate Sale Companies
These companies will organize and run your yard sale. This way, you don’t have to worry about it.
Understand What Is Available And At What Cost At Your New Destination
Research what is available and at what cost at your new destination to understand what is worth bringing and what is not. You might be surprised to find better and cheaper goods at your new destination.
The Emotional Aspect Of Downsizing
Downsizing can be difficult, but you can start today. First, make a list of the things you must take, what has sentimental value, and what you would be sad without. This can help you filter out the things you can get rid of.
